Dear Solar Guy, I have been interested in getting solar panels, however, I'm concerned about the possible effects, if any, of the upcoming solar storms. I know the storms are suppose to disrupt satelite transmissions and possibly affect power grids. However, I'm concerned if the solar storms can have a negative effect on those who already use solar panels and those (like myself) that are considering purchasing them. If possible, please let me know the possible effects of the solar storms on those who do own panels or on the total solar home energy system. Thanks! Darryl B. Katy, TX -------------------------------------------------------------- Dear Darryl, Good question. I think it unlikely to have any noticeable effect. Solar storms amount to a higher than average flux of charged particles coming from the sun (the "solar wind"). In effect, an electrical current flowing through space. Electrical currents generate magnetic fields, so the fields from a changing solar wind can cause the Earth's magnetic field to fluctuate. A wire that experiences a changing magnetic field has current flow induced in it. Such (very small) fluctuations can induce large currents in the very long wires that make up power grids and communication networks, possibly leading to failures. This is an electrical effect. By contrast, photovoltaics are responsive mainly to visible light, and would be unaffected (though any variations in solar radiation during solar storms would result in a corresponding change in PV output). The wires associated with a home PV system are very short compared to cros-country transmission lines, so although they would experience some effect from changing magnetic fields, the effects would be minute. Of course, Solar Themal systems such as solar water heaters would be basically unaffected. - Chuck Wright
