Financial & Tax Information

State of Texas Solar Property Tax Exemptions If you're using solar electricity, solar hot water, or wind power, take advantage of the State of Texas property tax exemptions available for solar and wind-powered energy devices. They may decrease the amount of property tax you're paying without reducing the valuation of your property.

Texas Property Tax Code Subtitle C. Taxable Property and Exemptions Chapter 11.

Increased Property Valuation Resulting from Energy Savings - Study 1 (69k PDF)
The Appraisal Journal, October 1998.

According to this study, funded in part by the United States Environmental Protection Agency, residential real estate markets assign to energy-efficient homes an incremental value that reflects the discounted value of annual fuel savings. The capitalization rate used by homeowners was expected to be 4%-10%, reflecting the range of after-tax mortgage interest rates during the 1990s and resulting in an incremental home value of $10 to around $25 for every $1 reduction in annual fuel bills.

Increased Property Valuation Resulting from Energy Savings - Study 2 (66k PDF)
The Appraisal Journal, October 1999

In a follow-up to the 1998 study, funded in part by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), this second report affirms that the results of these separate analyses were remarkably consistent, indicating that home value increases by about $20 for every $1 reduction in annual utility bills.
